Florida International University Downs No. 7 North Carolina in Double Overtime Coach Karl Kremser picks up his 300th win with FIU Head coach Karl Kremser picked up his 300th career win with the Golden Panthers as junior Lucas Scudeler scored in double overtime to give the No. 20 Florida International University men's soccer team a 3-2 win over No. 7 North Carolina in the second game of the Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, NC. The Golden Panthers (1-0-0) win their delayed season opener, after Hurricane Frances forced the cancellation of last weekend's FIU Diadora Classic, while the Tarheels (1-1-1) pick up their first loss of the season and fall in their home opener. Coach Kremser earned his 300th win with FIU in his 25th season at the helm, and improves to 313-186-37 overall in 27 years as a head coach. He ranks 10th in victories among active NCAA Division I men's soccer coaches, and is one of just 12 active NCAA Division I men's soccer coaches to have surpassed 300 career wins. Sophomore forward Jamie Watson scored two goals for UNC, but the Tarheels surrendered three unanswered scores to FIU, including the game-winner just 48 seconds in to the second overtime period, to lose the second game of the 2004 Carolina Nike Classic. After neither team was able to score in the first overtime period, FIU junior Jared Rose served a corner kick to the top of the box where Scudeler buried a one-timer at the 100:48 mark, giving the Golden Panthers a 3-2 victory. The loss was the Tar Heels first after 10 straight wins at the Carolina Nike Classic. UNC looked strong early, as Watson gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute of play with his first goal of the season. After intercepting a pass from a Florida International defender, Watson dribbled to the front of the net and put a shot past the diving Golden Panther goalkeeper from 12-yards out. Watson added his second goal of the match and the season early in the second half to push the Tar Heel lead to 2-0. Senior Tim Merritt served a ball to the far post that freshman Adam Sloustcher headed down to Watson, who tapped the ball into the net at the 53:20 mark. The second score gave Watson the first multi-goal game of his collegiate career. FIU senior co-captain Allen Handy cut the Tar Heel lead in half with an unassisted goal in the 61st minute. After dribbling through the Carolina defense, Handy put the ball at the far post past a diving Ford Williams for the Golden Panthers¹ first goal of the season. Less the 15 minutes later, FIU knotted the score at two on a give-and-go play between Rose and freshman Luis Perea. Rose eventually took and buried the shot from five yards out in front of the net. The Golden Panthers outshot Carolina, 13-9, including a 3-0 margin in overtime. Williams made a pair of outstanding saves for UNC in the first overtime to send the match to its final frame. He made six stops on the night, while FIU sophomore keeper Shawn Crowe made two saves. Wake Forest took the first game of night with a 1-0, double-overtime victory over Virginia Commonwealth. Scott Sealy scored the game-winner for the Deacons with a header at the 104 minute mark. The Carolina Nike Classic concludes with a pair of matches Sunday. No. 5 Wake Forest and FIU open play at 1 p.m., with the Tar Heels and VCU playing the final match of the event at 3:30 p.m. Scoring: 1. UNC - Jamie Watson (Unassisted), 37:47 2.
