FIU Men's Soccer Upsets No. 9 St. John's
In an aggressive and often heated match, the Florida International University men's soccer team used two second-half goals to upend No. 9 St. John's, 2-1, in the second game of the FIU Invitational at University Park on Friday evening.
The Golden Panthers (7-5-0) threatened to get on the board early, as a shot by senior Oscar Gil (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Lynn) sailed just wide of the goal in the 13th minute. But the Red Storm (9-4-4) would strike first, with freshman Steven Old's fourth goal of the season. After a yellow card was issued on FIU, St. John's freshman Andrei Gotsmanov took the free kick, passing the ball into the box and Old headed the ball into the top of the net to give the Red Storm the 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.
Junior Carron Williams (Santa Cruz, Trinidad) rejuvenated the Golden Panthers in the 79th minute. Spinning at the top of the box to ward off defenders, Williams shot the ball into the goal to tie the game at one-all.
With just over eight minutes remaining in the match, St. John's fired a corner kick into the box. Old took a rebounded ball and shot into the far right, but FIU sophomore goalkeeper Shawn Crowe (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) made a leaping save at the goal line to preserve the 1-1 score.
Just one minute later, FIU senior Fernando Plentz (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) took a pass from senior Allen Handy (Austin, Tex./Anderson) and shot the ball into the right side of the net for his sixth goal of the season and his third game-winning goal.
"I'm very proud of our guys," said 25th-year head coach Karl Kremser. "We battled a very good team. St. John's is always very difficult to beat. They are a talented and disciplined group of players. We came back in this game and really won a tough one."
The Golden Panthers have won four of their last five games and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Red Storm to even the all-time series at 4-4-0. In 1996, these two teams met in the NCAA Final, with St. John's taking the 4-1 win. The Red Storm returned to the NCAA Final last season, falling to Indiana, 2-1.
Crowe picked up the win, allowing one goal and recording four saves in 90:00. Senior Reed Dailey takes the loss for the Red Storm, allowing two goals and finishing with three saves in 88:41.
No. 21 South Florida shut out Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-0, in the first game of the FIU Invitational. Freshman Rodrigo Hildago scored both goals for the Bulls.
The FIU Invitational continues on Saturday, October 30, with USF taking on St. John's at 5 p.m. and host FIU facing Fairleigh Dickinson at 7:30 p.m.
