LONGWOOD ANNOUNCES 2005 MEMBERSHIP IN NCAA DIVISION I ATLANTIC SOCCER CONFERENCE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Longwood University men’s soccer program has been accepted into membership of the NCAA Division I Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) for 2005. The ASC is a single-sport, men’s soccer conference that includes the following institutions: Adelphi, Hartwick, and Oneonta State from New York; Howard from the District of Columbia, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), and Philadelphia University.

“ASC membership will give our men’s soccer team a chance to play against quality competition immediately and position the sport for automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Tournament starting in 2007,” said Longwood Director of Athletics Rick Mazzuto.

Longwood will be scheduled to play each ASC member next fall, and the contests will count in league standings. While the Lancer student-athletes will be eligible for ASC in-season and post-season awards, the Longwood program will not be eligible for the ASC Tournament during 2005 and 2006. The ASC Tournament champion earns an automatic berth into the Division I Men’s Soccer Championships.

“The addition of Longwood University to the Atlantic Soccer Conference is a very exciting move for us,” said league president Tom Shirley, who also serves as the Director of Athletics at Philadelphia University. “Longwood brings an outstanding blend of athletic and academic achievement to a continually growing conference in the ASC. We are sure that this will further enhance our reputation as a top-level NCAA Division I soccer conference for years to come.”

Florida International, who is joining Conference USA in men’s soccer for 2005, has won the last three-straight ASC championships. FIU had been a member of the ASC since its inception in 2000, winning four conference titles and advancing to the NCAA Tournament four times.

Longwood University will compete during 2005 while in its third year of the four-year Division I reclassification period toward official certification in September 2007. The Lancers could return as many as 16 letterwinners from this year’s squad that finished 1-16.
