LOPES INDUCTED INTO RUTGERS HALL OF FAME
NJIT Soccer Coach One Of Four Honorees On Sunday

NEWARK, N.J. – New Jersey Institute of Technology head men’s soccer coach Pedro Lopes of North Brunswick was inducted into the Rutgers University Olympic Sports Hall of Fame last Sunday in Piscataway.

Lopes was a two-time All-American as a player at Rutgers, and played in four NCAA Tournaments and two Final Fours. He was named the Atlantic-10 Conference Player of the Year in 1994, and scored the game-winning goal in the 1993 Atlantic-10 championship game. He started all 86 games of his collegiate career.

Lopes played three professional seasons with the North Jersey Imperials and served as an assistant coach for eight seasons at Rutgers before being introduced as NJIT’s ninth head coach in July 2003.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of Rutgers’ great athletes,” Lopes said. “I;m very proud of this achievement and will always hold Rutgers athletics close to my heart. I do want to thank head coach Bob Reasso for giving me the freedom to play and my teammates for making my job easier.”

Inducted with Lopes were Carla Camino (softball), Bob Naso (men’s lacrosse) and Pete Zoccolillo (baseball). The quartet was honored at halftime of the Scarlet Knights’ women’s basketball game against West Virginia on Sunday.

“This year’s class is yet another great example of the proud history we have here at Rutgers,” said Rutgers director of athletcs Robert E. Mulcahy. “The inductees are joining a very select and accomplished group of former student-athletes.”

New Jersey Institute of Technology, the state’s public research university, enrolls more than 8,200 students in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in 100 degree programs. NJIT is renowned for expertise in architecture, applied mathematics, wireless communications and networking, solar physics, advanced engineered particulate materials, nanotechnology, neural engineering and eLearning. The Highlanders’ athletics department sponsors 14 NCAA Division-II varsity sports, seven for men and seven for women, plus Division I men’s soccer.
