ATLANTIC SOCCER CONFERENCE AWARDED AUTOMATIC NCAA BID
Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) President Tom Shirley announced
today that the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee has approved a bid by
the league for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The bid comes in
the third year of the existence for the league, which currently has six
member institutions.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for our league," said Shirley, who
also serves as the Director of Athletics at Philadelphia University, an ASC
member. "To have the champion of our conference represent us at the NCAA
Division I Tournament is a monumental step. Hopefully, this will bring even
more recognition to an up-and-coming league that saw Florida International
University gain an at-large bid last year."
In addition to Philadelphia University and Florida International,
the league is comprised of Adelphi University, Hartwick College, Howard
University and Oneonta State College. Florida International claimed the
inaugural ASC championship in 2000, while Philadelphia University posted a
5-1-0 league mark en route to the title in 2001.
"I am extremely pleased with the progress the ASC has made in three
years," said Shirley. "We fulfilled out mandatory two-year NCAA waiting
period and now, things have come full-circle with an automatic bid to the
2002 College Cup."
