No. 25 FIU Men's Soccer Dominates New Jersey Tech in Conference Opener Box Score
Senior Fernando Plentz (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and sophomore David Hope (North Tyneside, England) each scored twice to lead the No. 25 Florida International University men's soccer team over New Jersey Tech, 6-0, in its Atlantic Soccer Conference opener in Miami on Friday evening.
The Golden Panthers (3-3-0, 1-1-0) and sophomore goalkeeper Shawn Crowe (Aurora, CO/Regis Jesuit) recorded their first shutout of the season, and with six goals, FIU had its highest offensive output since defeating league-opponent Philadelphia, 6-1, on October 31, 2003.
The Golden Panthers kept new-ASC member NJIT (0-8-0, 0-2-0) to just two shots over the game -- including just one shot on goal, and held them without a shot for the first 18 minutes. Conversely, FIU had 26 shots in the game, including four shots on goal by Hope.
The Highlanders have lost eight straight in their first season of NCAA Division I competition.
Just over one minute into the game, Plentz got the Golden Panthers on the board, scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty kick.
Despite outshooting the Highlanders 16-1 and holding the 6-1 advantage in corner kicks over the first period, FIU had trouble finding the back of the net for much of the first half.
But the Golden Panthers began to strengthen offensively around the 30-minute mark. Five minutes after entering the game, Hope took a pass from freshman Edgard Correa (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and recorded his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute. Just seven minutes later, junior Jean Camere (Miami, FL/St. John's) fed the ball to senior Oscar Gil (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Lynn), who scored his goal of the season from the top of the box.
FIU continued to control the ball in the second period, outshooting the Highlanders 10-1. In the 62nd minute, Hope took a corner kick from Gil and headed it into the goal to record his first multi-goal game. Plentz also recorded his first multi-goal game on Friday evening, adding his second goal in the 73rd minute.
Sophomore Mario Franca (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) capped off the Golden Panther scoring, adding his first goal of the season in the 75th minute.
Crowe earned the win for the Golden Panthers, allowing no goals in 75:36. Freshman Andres Arguello (Miami, FL/Killian) saw his first action in goal, recording one save in the last 14:24. NJIT freshman Ryan Sutherland allowed six goals and recorded three saves in 75:07.
FIU's game at Jacksonville, orginally scheduled for Monday, has been postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Jeanne.
The Golden Pathers return to the pitch on Sunday, October 3, versus South Florida at 7 p.m.
