NJIT FALLS SHORT IN FIRST DIVISION I MATCH
Monmouth Tops Highlanders, 4-0
Box Score
NEWARK, N.J. – The Monmouth University men’s soccer team defeated host New Jersey Institute of Technology, 4-0, in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Lubetkin Field before an enthusiastic crowd of 511. The match was the season opener for both schools, and the first in school history for NJIT as a member of Division I.
“I’m glad that we got to play our first Division I match at home in front of a great crowd, but I;m disappointed that the result didn’t show better for us,” said second-year Highlander head coach Pedro Lopes. “Our guys may have been a little nervous, and it caused us to play chaotically instead of as a unit. Monmouth did a great job of pressuring us, making us make mistakes, and then taking advantage of their chances.”
The Hawks’ Tom Poznanski (Howell, NJ/Howell) scored on the game’s first shot attempt in the seventh minute, but the Highlanders kept MU off the scoreboard the rest of the first half behind four saves from keeper Collin Cunning (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) .
Monmouth received a goal from Dan Pires (Lincroft, NJ/CBA) two minutes, nine seconds into the second half. It would put the game away with tallies in the 80th and 83rd minutes. Poznanski finished with two goals and an assist, and Pires a goal and an assist. John Carrozza (Springfield, PA/Central Regional) also scored for MU.
“The excitement was great tonight,” Lopes said. “I really had to yell to be heard. “That’s the environment we have to establish here. Hopefully the crowd will continue to support us, and they will see a winning team.”
