IONA TOPS NJIT, 5-1
Gaels Ride Early Lead

NEWARK, N.J. - The Iona College men's soccer team scored twice in the first 15 minutes of its 5-1 non-conference victory over host New Jersey Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening at Lubetkin Field.

Iona's Nick Smaldone (Cheshire, CT/Notre Dame) settled an attempted NJIT clear and fired a shot inside the post to open the scoring at 10:46. Less than four minutes later, a cross from Sheu Fortunato (Coquitan, B.C.) traveled across the box to the foot of David Kinneman (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) , who one-touched the ball into the net.

The Gaels (3-1) ended NJIT's comeback hopes when Sebastian Garcia-Lopez (Flushing, NY/St. John's Prep) scored two minutes, 35 seconds, into the second half. Abdulla Begai (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) had a goal and an assist for Iona, while Mario Douglas (Gasparillo, Trinidad) scored for the Highlanders (0-5).

Three Iona keepers split the victory with starter Patrick McAllen (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) earning the decision. NJIT's Collin Cunning (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) made six saves.
