LONDONO, SPAULDING SIGN WITH NJIT MEN’S SOCCER
New Rochelle, Souhegan Graduates Ink Letters Of Intent
NEWARK, N.J. – Fernando Londono of New Rochelle, New York, and Greg Spaulding of Amherst, New Hampshire, have signed national letters of intent to continue their men’s soccer careers at New Jersey Institute of Technology, NJIT head coach Pedro Lopes announced today.
Londono recently completed his playing career as a 5-foot-9 forward at New Rochelle High. He also competed for the club team F.C. Westchester. He expects to major in engineering. “Fernando is very technical and, as a forward, always finds himself in scoring positions,” said Lopes, who is entering his third season. “He will bring to our program a great work rate and the passion to win. I expect him to fight for a starting position right away.”
Spaulding is coming off of a postgraduate year at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. He is a 2004 graduate of Souhegan High, where he was a two-time first-team all-state selection and scored 44 career goals. A 6-foot-3 forward/midfielder, he played at the club level for Hampshire FC and was a teammate of fellow NJIT signee Dylan Broadley. Spaulding, who was also second-team all-state in basketball, intends to major in history. “Greg brings to our program great size and technical ability,” Lopes said. “He can play anywhere on the field and will be looked upon to make an immediate impact.”
Londono and Spaulding increase Lopes’s Class of 2009 to eight signees. They join: Rafael Berrera (Red Oak, TX/Red Oak), Kevin Blanco (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), Broadley (Milford, NH/Milford), Kayo Emojong (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair), Scott Rietze (Bowmanville, Ontario/Courtice) and Clay Smith (Plano, TX/Plano).
NJIT will kick-off its 54th season of men’s soccer in the fall, including its second as a member of NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Soccer Conference. The Highlanders are eligible for the NCAA College Cup for the first time.
New Jersey Institute of Technology, the state’s public research university, enrolls more than 8,200 students in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in 100 degree programs. NJIT is renowned for expertise in architecture, applied mathematics, wireless communications and networking, solar physics, advanced engineered particulate materials, nanotechnology, neural engineering and eLearning. The Highlanders’ athletics department sponsors 14 NCAA Division-II varsity sports, seven for men and seven for women, plus Division I men’s soccer. NJIT is completing an exploratory year to move its entire athletic program to the Division I level.
