NJIT ANNOUNCES FIRST DIVISION-I MEN’S SOCCER SCHEDULE
National Quarterfinalist FIU, State Foe Monmouth Highlight Slate
NEWARK, N.J. – Two 2003 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, three New York metropolitan area opponents and one New Jersey foe highlight the first Division-I men’s soccer schedule in New Jersey Institute of Technology history.
NJIT, a Division II member which elevated its men’s soccer program to NCAA Division I last summer, will play a full Division I schedule for the first time in 2004. The Highlanders, the newest members of the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC), are in their final year of a two-year provisional period, and expect to be full D-I members for the 2005 season.
Highlighting NJIT’s ASC slate is a road game against 2003 national quarterfinalist Florida International University, the No. 13-ranked team in the final national poll, on September 24. Two days later, the Highlanders will take on another NCAA qualifier in the University of Central Florida in non-league action.
NJIT will play home games against local foes Manhattan College (October 12), Long Island University (October 19) and ASC opponent Adelphi University (Oct. 30). The only New Jersey school on the schedule is Monmouth University, which travels to Newark for the Highlanders’ season opener on September 1.
The other members of the ASC are Oneonta State University (away, September 18), Philadelphia University (away, October 2), Howard University (home, October 23), and Hartwick College (home, October 27). NJIT will also participate in the University of Maryland-Baltimore County adidas Kick-Off on September 4-6. The complete schedule is attached.
NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees to students in 80 degree programs. NJIT ranks ranks among the top schools of U.S. News & World Report’s list of national doctoral universities.
