Atlantic Soccer Conference Tournament Set
Hartwick College to Host Inaugural Playoff

ONEONTA, NY – The final bid went down to the wire, as Howard University defeated Adelphi University, 2-0, at Howard on Sunday afternoon in the last regularly scheduled match of the season to determine the final four teams for the inaugural Atlantic Soccer Conference tournament, which will be hosted by top seed Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. on Friday, November 11, and Sunday, November 13.

The winner of the tournament receives the conference’s automatic qualifier to the 2005 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer College Cup Tournament.

Howard’s win over Adelphi earned the Howard the number two seed in the tournament and knocked Adelphi out of the conference tournament, allowing Philadelphia University to claim the number four seed.

Oneonta State will be the number three seed.

“We are very excited to host the inaugural Atlantic Soccer Conference tournament,” said Hartwick College athletic director Debbie Warren. “The schools of the ASC have a great soccer tradition, and the City of Oneonta has long been renowned for it’s passion for the sport. We expect that we will have three exciting and competitive matches, and we hope that the both the townspeople and the college students come out at full strength in support of the tournament.”

Hartwick College, 11-5-1 overall and ranked number 11 in the nation this week, earned the top seed in the tourney, and the right to host by winning the ASC’s regular season title with a 5-1 mark in conference play. The Hawks yielded just one goal to a conference opponent this year.

With Philadelphia getting into the tournament, Hartwick’s semifinal match against the Rams will be a compelling one, as Philadelphia was the lone school to defeat Hartwick in conference play this year. The Rams topped Hartwick, 1-0 in overtime on November 1. Hartwick out-shot the rams 19-4, but Philadelphia got the lone goal to win the match.

Howard (3-9-2) will be the number two seed, with a 3-2-1 mark in conference play. Howard gets the second seed by virtue of a tie breaker with Oneonta based on goal differential. The two schools have identical records in conference play, and tied their match this season.

Oneonta State (7-9-1) will be the number three seed in the tourney, posting a 3-2-1 mark in conference play.

Philadelphia University finished the regular season 5-12-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the ASC.

Adelphi, NJIT, and Longwood University did not qualify for the conference tournament. Longwood finished with a 3-2-1 record in the ASC, however in their first year as a member of the conference and as a provisional Division I member the Lancers are not eligible to compete in the conference tournament this season.

The last two ASC regular season titles, and automatic qualifiers to the NCAA tourney were won by Florida International University, which left the ASC this season to play in Conference USA.

Semifinals games on Friday will be played on Hartwick’s Elmore Field, with the first semifinal featuring Howard vs. Oneonta State at 4:00 p.m. The second semifinal is scheduled to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. with Hartwick hosting Philadelphia University.

Tickets for the games are $5 for adults, and $3 for students and children, and will be sold at the gate.
