LAUREL’S ROMERO SIGNS WITH NJIT MEN’S SOCCER
Sussex Central Senior Inks National Letter Of Intent

NEWARK, N.J. – Eddie Romero of Laurel, Delaware, has signed a national letter of intent to play collegiate soccer at New Jersey Institute of Technology, NJIT head coach Pedro Lopes announced today.

Romero, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound forward, was named first-team all-state as a senior for coach Kevin Cast at Sussex Central High in Georgetown. A team captain, he led Sussex to the 2003 state playoffs. He also plays club soccer for the River Waves.

“Eddie has the ability to change the game at any instant,” Lopes said. “He is very athletic and possesses very good technical skills. He has an incredible work rate on and off the field. I expect Eddie to have an immediate impact on our 2004 team.”

Romero joins Daniel Bautista of Freehold, New Jersey, Dalton Carofilis of Monroe Township, New Jersey, Collin Cunning of Belfast Maine, Robert Herrera of Dover, Delaware, and Ryan Sutherland of Harrisville, Rhode Island, as members of NJIT first Division-I recruiting class. The Highlanders recently reclassified their men’s soccer program to NCAA Division I from Division II effective with the 2004 season.

Romero is the son of Nina Romero of Sycamore Road. He intends to major in management.

The NJIT men’s soccer program has a .555 winning percentage in its 52-year history, including the NAIA national championship in 1960. The Highlanders have made 17 postseason appearances and can boast of 17 all-Americans. They start play in the Atlantic Soccer Conference this fall.

NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees to students in 80 degree programs. NJIT ranks ranks among the top schools of U.S. News & World Report’s list of national doctoral universities. The Highlanders’ athletics department sponsors 14 NCAA Division-II varsity sports, seven for men and seven for women, plus Division-I men’s soccer.
