Hartwick Routs Philly in ASC Semi
Hartwick To Meet Oneonta State in Championship on Sunday

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick College extracted a measure of revenge on Philadelphia University, as Hartwick posted a 4-0 win over the Rams in the Atlantic Soccer Conference semifinals on Elmore Field Friday evening.

Philadelphia was the lone team to beat Hartwick in conference play this season.

The Hawks got off to a quick start in the match, scoring two goals in a span of 1:02 in the first half. The two goals were nearly mirror images of each other. The first came from J.P. Boyle (Trinity/Renfrew, Scotland) at 22:38. The play started with Eldin Sijercic (Mayde Creek, Houston, Tex.) playing a through ball on the right side into the box, where Austin McCann (Borken Arrow/Jenks, Okla.) challenged the goalkeeper and played the ball across to Boyle, who had a wide open net at the left post.

“Austin McCann did very well on both goals,” said Boyle. “He slide-tackled the goal keeper and I thought he’d score himself, but he was very unselfish and passed it across to me.”

“It was important to get that first goal,” said McIntyre, who’s team out-shot Philadelphia 19-4 in the match in Philly 10 days ago, a match that Hartwick lost 1-0 in overtime. “It was easy to motivate the guys for this game. We were spot on in our preparation for today.”

The Hawks second goal came just over a minute later, as this time Craig Potter (St. Michael’s Academy/Irvine, Scotland) played a long ball in from the right side that was touched on by McCann to Chris Sardon (Jesuit/Sacramento, Calif.), who was alone at the left post for a 2-0 Hartwick lead.

“The first goal was the hard one,” said Sardon. “That was the goal we couldn’t get last time. We needed the second goal, otherwise they are still in the game. I think the third goal kind of broke their backs.”

Barry Pearson (Linlithgow Academy/Linlithgow, Scotland) put a resonating exclamation point on the half for Hartwick as he hammered a cross from Chris Greatwich (Lewes Priory/Lewes, England) into the net with just 35 seconds left in the half.

The Hawks added one more goal in the second half, as Chris Jackson (Ridge Danyers/Manchester, England) redirected a Kenny Rodriguez (Parkview/Lilburn, Ga.) free kick in the 53rd minute for the 4-0 final.

Hartwick out-shot the Rams 25-7 tonight, and had a 13-2 edge in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Joe Gibson (Lancaster Mennonite/Manheim, Pa.) made just two saves in earning his third shut out of the season

Hartwick will meet cross-town rival Oneonta State in the ASC championship match on Sunday on Elmore Field at 1:00 p.m. The winner receives the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Hartwick will be looking for its’ 23rd trip to the NCAA Division I playoffs, and its’ first since 1995.

Oneonta was a 2-1 winner over Howard in overtime earlier tonight.

“I’m excited for everyone associated with soccer in Oneonta,” said McIntyre. “I’ve felt we have been the best two teams in the league all season. They [Oneonta] played well today. We’ll see what happens Sunday.”
