Cunningham Honored by Nassau County Sports Commission Senior goalkeeper named Male Athlete of the Year
Adelphi University senior goalkeeper Tom Cunningham was named the Condé Nast Male Athlete of the Year by the Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC) as announced earlier this week. The honor is awarded based on excellence in academics, athletics and community service. Cunningham will be honored at the 10th Annual Award Dinner on Monday, April 19, 2004 at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place, N.Y.
In addition, Kelley Watts, head women's basketball coach, was named College Coach of the Year. Other honorees include some of the best Nassau County affiliate athletes, including Boomer Esiason, Rod Gilbert, Dominique Dawes and John Velasquez, to name a few. In addition, the presentation of the sports commission's two national awards, the John Mackey Award and the Dick Schapp Award, will take place.
Cunningham had a breakout season for the Panthers. Appearing in just one game prior to 2003, he made 13 starts in 15 appearances. He finished the season with a 7-5-1 record, recording two shutouts. He is the treasurer of his Senior Class and vice-president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Since arriving at Adelphi, he has been involved with many service activities, including Blood Drives, Youth Sport Clinics and Wheelchair Basketball events. A physical education major, he maintains a 3.392 grade point average and has received Departmental and Dean's List honors.
Past Adelphi award winners include, Head Women's Soccer Coach Rich Ilsley and women's soccer player Jennifer Garone in 2003, former women's basketball coach Kim Barnes-Arico and men's basketall player Eddie Willliams in 2002 and former men's basketball coach Jim Ferry in 2001. |
