Wagenaar Called Up To National Team
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick College junior goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar (Grimsby, Ontario) has been called up to the roster of the Canadian men's soccer team for its international friendly against Spain on September 3.
"It's such a great honor," said Wagenaar. "I just found out yesterday prior to our match when I got a call from one of the organizers of the trip. It's something I have been dreaming about since I was young, so in a way it’s a dream come true."
"We are very proud of Josh," said Hartwick College men's soccer coach Ian McIntyre. "He has worked extremely hard, developed a lot, and is coming off a great U20 World Cup appearance this summer. Everyone associated with the Hartwick Soccer program is extremely excited for Josh."
Wagenaar was a regional All-America selection and a first-team All-Atlantic Soccer Conference selection while playing for Hartwick in 2004. He posted a 0.87 goals against average with six shutouts while helping the Hawks to a 13-3-3 season.
Wagenaar joins a long list of Hartwick players that have competed internationally, including Mike Burns '92, a member of the US World Cup Team in 1994 and 1998. Hartwick alumni Dominick Kinnear, Dave D'Errico, Eddie Hawkins, Glenn Myernick and Doug Wark all have played for the US National team.
Wagenaar is listed on the roster along with Kenny Stamatopoulos, a professional goalkeeper with Sweden's FC Boden. Stamatopoulos has just one cap, while Wagenaar may get the opportunity to get his first cap in international play.
"I think I am probably the back-up keeper heading into the trip, but we'll have a week of training over there, and there are only two keepers on the roster, so I may get a chance to get into the match."
The Canadian national team will train for a week in Spain before its match at Santander, Spain, on September 3 with a 9:45 p.m. local time kickoff. Wagenaar was the only collegiate player called to Canadian National Team coach Frank Yallop’s squad for the match against the world’s ninth-ranked club. Wagenaar said that Jamie Peters, whom he played with in the U20 world Cup, is the only other member of the roster with whom he has played before.
Wagenaar will return to Hartwick after the match. With Wagenaar away, sophomore Ryan Cruise (Ormskirk, England) is the likely option to inherit the starting role for the Hawks' season opening tournament at UConn on September 2 and 4. Cruise did not allow a goal in the three matches he appeared in last year.
"With Josh earning the call up to the national team, it is going to give other players in our program a chance to step up and establish themselves," said McIntyre. "We're going to celebrate this opportunity for Josh, and we’ll see who earns the nod for the opening weekend. We’re fortunate to have some depth at the goalkeeper position."
